If you’re currently considering purchasing a dehumidifier for your home and the Delonghi DE500P dehumidifier is on your list, then you may want to think again. This post will discuss what claims Delonghi makes about the DE500P and whether or not it lives up to those claims. Before buying the Delonghi DE500P dehumidifier, make sure you read this.
Dampness can really wreak havoc in your home. Not only can dampness exacerbate the symptoms of asthma and allergies, it can also actually harm the structural integrity of your house. If dampness is a problem and you find that you’re needing to repair damage from peeling paint, mold or mildew, then you definitely need a dehumidifier. Just opening a window isn’t going to do the trick. You’ll need to invest in a product like the Delonghi DE500P dehumidifier to remove the moisture from the air and keep your home dry.
Delonghi claims that this particular dehumidifier is more powerful than other comparable models in the same price range: With its ability to remove up to 50 pints of excess moisture each day it can dry out rooms that would otherwise begin to accumulate mold or mildew which will save you some serious maintenance headaches in the future. And this would all be fine if it actually lived up to its claims. I bought the Delonghi DE500P and in actual fact it removed something closer to 3 pints a day and the room (in which I had it) still felt damp.
The castor wheels of the Delonghi DE500P make it easy to move around. If you’ve ever had to drag a heavy dehumidifier from one room to another you know what a back-saver that can be. I have no qualms with the claims that Delonghi made here. The DE500P is easy to move around.
The big feature that Delonghi claims differentiates the Delonghi DE500P dehumidifier from its competitors is that it has a pump. But let me warn you, the unit is really loud when using the the pump feature so if you’re planning on watching a movie or listening to music whilst the dehumidifier on, then you simply won’t be able to use the pump. In fact, it is so loud that as far as I’m concerned, you can only when you’re out of the house.
Delonghi DE500P Review – Why I Think The Delonghi DE500P Dehumidifier Is A Dog
As you may have surmised from the title of this particular post, I am not a fan of the Delonghi DE500P Dehumidifier. In fact I feel so strongly that it is a rubbish product that I created this site, specifically to ward off others who might be about to make the same mistake that I did.
Let me get straight to the meat of why I feel the way that I do:
1. I received this unit and it wasn’t appropriately packed for long distance shipping. It was just packed in a tight cardboard box. My unit wasn’t damaged but it very easily could have been. This was a concern right off the bat.
2. I put the unit in our basement which had a measured 74% humdity and plenty of mould to boot. I let the Delonghi DE500P run for 36 hours, thinking that my dampness troubles were soon going to be behind me. And at the end of that period? It had pulled out a measly 3 cups of water! Bear in mind that this is a unit that Delonghi claims will remove 50 pints a day!
3. After a month of less than satisfactory performance, the unit started rattling and then a week later the pump actually broke. It was the pump feature above all others that led me to purchase the DE500P in the first place. Without the pump working the DE500P is practically worthless as the water container is so small that it requires constant emptying.
4. When I rang their customer service department they were less than helpful. They suggested that if I mail the unit at my expense to their service department then the faulty parts might be able to be replaced under warranty; but they weren’t jumping out of their skin to help.
To make matters worse I then discovered after the fact that several others had had the same experience as me when I came across these Delonghi DE500P reviews at Amazon. If only I’d found those before!
The silver lining to this rather grey cloud is that whilst I was on the Amazon site, I discovered another Dehumidifier that had nothing but raving fans.
I ended up buying 2 Frigidaire units for my home. I bought the Frigidaire FAD704TDP 70-Pint Dehumidifier for my basement and the Frigidaire FAD504TDD 50-Pint Dehumidifier for a smaller guest room that had damp problems. Both of them work superbly, but let me list specifically what I like about the Frigidaire 50 Pint Dehumidifier.
- It looks great (not hugely important but it’s nice to have something that isn’t an eyesore)
- Easy to set up. I had it running within 5 minutes of getting it unpacked.
- It REALLY does suck moisture out of the air (not like the silly 3 cups of dew I was getting with the DeLonghi)
- It’s quiet (another godsend after putting up with the thunderous DeLonghi)
- It doesn’t suck much power.
- I struggled a little with removing and emptying the bucket initially (but after re-reading the instructions) I realised that I wasn’t removing it in the prescribed manner. I now don’t have any problems.
So, if you’re after a cost effective dehumidifier that lives up to its claims, then I’d strongly recommend that cross the Delonghi DE500P Dehumidifier off your list and buy the Frigidaire 50 Pint Dehumidifier.
